Fair chance hiring
OUR ALUMNAE ARE NOT A CHARITY HIRE. THEY ARE CANDIDATES WHO HAVE DONE THE WORK.
Empowering Women Out of Prison (EWOP) alumnae have earned more than a second chance. They have prepared for it.
After completing a year of leadership and entrepreneurship training, developing a business plan, and demonstrating their readiness to succeed, these women enter the workforce equipped with the skills, determination, and professionalism employers need.
Hiring an EWOP alumna isn’t an act of charity. It’s an investment in proven talent, exceptional work ethic, and unwavering commitment.
This page is for employers who are ready to discover what happens when opportunity meets preparation.

What it is
FAIR CHANCE HIRING, DEFINED.
Fair chance hiring is the practice of evaluating job candidates on what they can do, not on a background-check screen that disqualifies them at the application stage. It is not a charity hire. It does not change your standards for performance, attendance, or fit. It changes who gets the chance to compete.
Fair chance hiring is increasingly mainstream. Major employers (Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Target, Best Buy, IBM, and others) have publicly committed to fair chance practices. Texas employers across construction, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, and professional services participate in similar programs through partner organizations.
What changes for your HR practice: your application removes the background check at the screening stage. Background checks happen later, after a candidate has reached the offer stage. At that point, you evaluate the specific candidate, the specific role, and the specific background, not a blanket disqualifier.
